Position Profile 

Reporting to the CEO, the Financial Controller provides the leadership, management and vision to ensure that ventureLAB has the proper financial controls, processes and other related systems to effectively and sustainably grow the organization, ensure long-term, sustainable financial strength and operational efficiency and leverage best practices to amplify the organization’s reputation for strong and strategic fiscal management. 

The Financial Controller is responsible for ensuring full compliance with the policies and procedures as it relates to all finance and initiatives at ventureLAB which includes oversight, governance and efficient administration of ventureLAB’s financial management system and its evolution to support the growth and strategic objectives of the organization.

Responsibilities 

Financial Reporting: Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, and other financial documentation as required by senior management, the board of directors, and key stakeholders. 

Budgeting and Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process and quarterly forecasting, including the preparation and management of departmental and program-specific budgets. Provide insights and recommendations to optimize financial performance. 

Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow, manage liquidity, and ensure the organization has adequate funding for its operations and growth. Advise the President, CEO, and Board of Directors on cash flow, investment priorities, and funding matters. 

Internal Controls: Develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure the integrity of financial records. 

Compliance: Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and financial reporting standards. Maintain systems, processes, and compliance requirements to ensure accurate financial reporting for the Board and key funding stakeholders. 

Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making, including variance analysis, cost-benefit analysis, financial modeling, and scenario analysis for future fiscals. 

Team Leadership: Supervise and lead the finance team, providing guidance and professional development opportunities. 

Grant Reporting: Oversee the financial aspects of grant management, including budgeting, accurate cost record maintenance, reporting, and ensuring compliance with funder requirements. Oversee the management of governmental grants, ensuring accurate cost records and timely reporting. 

Systems Improvement: Continuously assess and improve financial systems, processes, and policies to increase efficiency and accuracy. Collaborate with the CEO and Leadership Team to develop and implement financial infrastructure systems designed to enable strategic growth objectives. 

Board and Committee Reporting: Prepare the Treasurer’s Report for the quarterly Finance & Audit Committee Meetings and Board Meetings. Provide regular financial updates through monthly and quarterly reports, maintaining a Rolling Forecast to year-end. 

Qualifications 

● Recognized Canadian accounting designation (CPA) mandatory; a master’s degree in business administration, financial management or accounting is preferred 

Minimum 5 years experience with both external audit and in-house financial management experience gained in a high-growth organization. 

● Experience in a similar not-for-profit role is an asset. 

● Experience with government grant reporting is an asset. 

● Stellar reputation for integrity and ethical conduct 

● Strong judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills 

● Strong team leadership skills and demonstrated initiative and responsiveness; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers and work across cross-functional and diverse teams; demonstrated past experience of managing direct reports 

● Entrepreneurial team player who can multitask 

● Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written

Salary Range: $85,000 to $100,000 CAD per annum

Hybrid Work Model 

As part of ventureLAB’s Hybrid Work Policy, this role is required to be on-site every Thursday as well as a minimum of an additional four (4) days each month.
