About the Role

Obruta is growing our team as we build the autonomy technologies required for fully-automated spacecraft pilots and we lay the foundation for a sustainable in-space economy. Obruta is seeking a keen, passionate Robotics Lab Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for designing and building laboratory facilities, commissioning, calibrating, and operating them, and supporting the development and testing of autonomous spacecraft algorithms in a laboratory setting.

Please apply with your resume and GitHub using the "Apply" button.

Compensation

  • $70,000.00 - 100,000.00 CAD annual salary.
  • Stock options available.
  • Health benefits package.
  • Starting 3 weeks annual time off.

Time & Location

  • Full-time.
  • In-person located in Ottawa, Ontario and hybrid work arrangements available once the facility is complete.
  • Must be able to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build a complete dual-arm robotics laboratory from the ground up, including mechanical fixtures, robotic arm integration, end-effector design, and sensor setups.
  • Commission, calibrate, and operate the robotics lab, ensuring all hardware (e.g., robotic arms, vision systems, linear rails) and software are working in harmony for precise operations.
  • Develop and execute test plans to validate autonomous spacecraft algorithms and robotic systems in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment.
  • Manage and maintain the lab's infrastructure, including hardware, sensors, computing systems, and software.
  • Support the development and testing of the RPOD Kit by collaborating with our GNC and computer vision engineers.
  • Mentor and supervise a co-op student, delegating tasks and providing guidance to help them gain practical experience in robotics engineering.
  • Maintain honest and clear communication about work status, timelines, and conflicts.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field.
  • Proven track record of taking complex ideas from concept to a working physical prototype. We want to see examples of projects you’ve designed and built.
  • Deep hands-on experience with robotics hardware and sensor integration.
  • Strong knowledge of robotic kinematics, dynamics, and control.
  • Proficiency in programming languages essential for robotics, such as Python and C++.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink for dynamics and control analysis.
  • An eager attitude to build incredible software that will make spacecraft fully autonomous,  and a shared vision to drive massive growth in the off-world economy.
  • Excellent communication skills—they’re essential for us all to flourish.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with robotic arm motion planning and pathfinding algorithms.
  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of complex systems.
  • Experience in a lab management or supervisory role.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft operations or autonomous systems.

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome gets in the way of meeting incredible candidates, and don’t want it to get in the way of meeting you. If you feel like you don’t meet all the requirements for this role, we encourage you to apply anyways.

About Obruta

Obruta Space Solutions was founded in 2019 with a vision of humanity reaching an interplanetary future. To achieve this, Obruta is building advanced autonomy technology and laying the foundation for a sustainable multiplanetary economy.

Today's satellites cannot be repaired, refueled, or reused. The single-use paradigm of the space economy restricts the missions we can perform and limits the market's economic potential. Obruta is changing this with our flagship product, the RPOD Kit. With a turnkey system for spacecraft rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking, satellite servicing and reusable logistics are being brought to the commercial market so that maintaining a spacecraft is as easy as maintaining your car.

If you share our vision, then we invite you to apply to join our growing team and help lay the foundation for humanity’s interplanetary future.
